About me - Charlotte Thompson

I have always loved to paint, draw and be creative and I was encouraged to do this from an early age. It runs in the family with my sister, mum and my grandmother all being painters. I studied Art alongside Teaching and gained a BA in Art and Education at Reading University. For over 25 years I have taught in primary and middle schools and one of the highlights has been teaching children how to be artists. When I am not teaching I like to spend time creating my own artwork, taking inspiration from the world around me. I live in the beautiful Tyne Valley, Northumberland which continues to be a huge inspiration. I’m excited to say my painting workshops are taking off and I’m teaching other people to experience the wonder, creativity and relaxation that painting brings to me.

Favourite places

Northumberland, Cumbria and Dumfries and Galloway feature a lot in my work. The River Tyne is my favourite haunt and I love to see how the landscape, flora and fauna change with the seasons. I often walk along the River Tyne in Hexham enjoying the scenery, birdlife and plant life.

Art Process

I’m always learning and always trying new things. …. Watercolour has been my favourite medium for many years, although I have recently fallen in love with acrylics again. Watercolour brings instant results and I am fascinated by the way the paint changes as it becomes absorbed by the paper. Acrylic can be used very thinly and it’s possible to build up glazes, as with watercolour. It is also a little more forgiving as layers can be painted over and changed more readily. I have started to revisit still life subjects, and some of my newest paintings are based on still life arrangements. Digital art is also a fascinating process. Sometimes I experiment with ideas using a tablet and stylus, before committing to canvas. My other interests include walking, birding, singing in an acapella group and cooking.
